There are three primary types of microphone windscreens: * Foam Windscreens: Made of open-cell polyurethane foam, these are a basic, cost-effective option that offers up to 15-20 dB of noise reduction and are suitable for indoor or light outdoor use. However, they may not be sufficient for strong wind conditions. * Synthetic Fur Windguards (Windjammers): Featuring an inner foam layer and an outer layer of synthetic fur, they offer significantly better wind protection (25-40 dB attenuation) by redirecting air. However, low-quality fur might cause some high-frequency loss and may not be aesthetically pleasing. * Baskets/Blimps: Large, pill-shaped structures that create a substantial “dead air” chamber. These offer the highest level of wind noise reduction (up to 50dB), making them ideal for outdoor recording in extreme conditions. However, their multi-layer design can sometimes lead to higher frequency loss.
